[Troubleshooting] Failed to recover SP

Problem: After doing a datacenter relocation of a FAS8040 HA-Pair, one of the nodes would not boot on startup with the following:

BIOS version: 9.3
Portions Copyright (c) 2011-2014 NetApp. All Rights Reserved
Waiting for SP ...
SP failure. Resetting SP from primary FW. This can take a few minutes
Waiting for SP ...
SP failure. Resetting SP from backup FW. This can take a few minutes
Waiting for SP ...
Failed to recover SP
IPMI PCI Slot Control failed.
IPMI:Get controller FRU inventory:failed
BIOS POST Failure(s) detected: SP IPMI failure. Abort AUTOBOOT
LOADER>

Solution: This might just be good luck. Usually these "Failed to recover SP" issues mean you need a log a call with NetApp Support and get the motherboard replaced.

  1. Unplug the SP cable (you might want to try with unplugging other cables, I just unplugged the SP)
  2. Reseat the motherboard/system board or - better said - pull the controller tray out the chassis to kill power to it, wait like 30 seconds, then push it back in.
  3. Cross your fingers
When the node booted up the second time, we were lucky:

Waiting for SP ...
SP failure. Resetting SP from primary FW. This can take a few minutes
Waiting for SP ...

Waiting for SP ...
SP recovered successfully after a reset from backup FW image
