Confessions of a Crap Blog-er

The title is inspired by the excellent science fiction author Philip K. Dick and the title of his book “Confessions of a Crap Artist.”

I’ve felt compelled to write this post for a while, simply because it’s a great title!

Well, is it true?

No, I don’t think so. Really, there’s no such thing as a crap blog-er. A blog is anything you want it to be, there’s no rules, no definition that it should be this or that.

If we’re going to take a more cynical view of what’s a crap blog or not, it could be said that:

“A good blog is a blog with a large following!” In which case then I’m a crap blog-er, judging by the stats where some blog posts struggle to hit 100 page views - well that’s not a very large following.

“A good blog is a blog that’s had some impact!” In which case then I’m a reasonably good blog-er. This is definitely a stumble upon blog, not a blog that mobilizes a large following who avidly tune in to every new post. If we take the world’s population being a nice round 5 billion. Say that 1 billion are in work. Say that of those 1 billion perhaps 1% works in IT (probably too high a percentage - but bear with me). That makes 10 million people work in IT. So, a blog with nearly 1.5 million page views and 500’000 visits has made a reasonable mark on its target audience.

And does it matter? Absolutely not! I just needed to write some inane flim-flam to ensure this wasn’t a post with just two sentences (the top two ignoring the image title.) At the end of the day, if you enjoy writing a blog, you have the time to do it - and that time is not distracting from more important stuff (which - admittedly - I fear this blog does) - then write a blog and don’t care if no one ever tunes in!

Even if no one else in the world cast their eyes upon this blog, it would continue to benefit me massively as a very useful and easy to get to reference.
