My Thoughts on the "system controller replace" ARL Head Swap Method

Recently I had the opportunity to try out the "system controller replace" ARL Head Swap (Head Upgrade) method. This was for an 'Upgrade controller models in the same chassis' for an AFF A800 to AFF A90 running ONTAP 9.15.1P4.

See: Start here: Choose your ARL upgrade procedure

The documentation is here: Use "system controller replace" commands to upgrade controller models in the same chassis

Personally, I feel that if you're comfortable with the manual ARL method (Manually upgrade controller hardware running ONTAP 9.8 or later), then that method is quicker. Also, I like the flexibility the manual ARL method gives (i.e. you can do two or more HA-pairs at the same time if you have a big cluster). The "system controller replace" semi-automated method really only gives you automated reassigning disks. The documentation for the "system controller replace" method has too many reboots for most scenarios. With experience you can speed things up by skipping some sections. And the manual method has more use cases (not limited by what's been programmed into ONTAP).

For now, I'll stick with the manual approach 🍻
